Our ceremony and reception took place at the American Theater in Charleston, SC. Opened in 1942 as Charleston’s premiere movie house, The American Theater’s roots are regal Art-Deco architecture and timeless Hollywood glamour. Built to serve the vast residentail area north of Calhoun Street, the American Theater was medium sized seating 900 people. It closed in 1977 and was purchased by Patrick Properties in 1996.

These are pictures we took when touring the venue in the summer of 2010, as well as some pictures we found online.

Finding pictures of weddings that took place here was fairly difficult. However, we were able to track down pictures from 2 events. Here are some online pictures from a Rehearsal Dinner taken by Dreamland Images and a Wedding Reception taken by photographer Ricki Ford.
Venues that Did Not Make the Cut
After some extensive searching online and gathering of information over the phone, we narrowed down our list and visited some really interesting venues in Charleston. These are some of the places that did not make the final cut.
1. Harbour Club (+) The right size and a location you can't beat, but (-) not the atmosphere we were looking for and slightly outdated style.
2. Eye Level Art Gallery (+) You are working with pretty much a blank slate in terms of decor. (-) Location that is not easily accessible or desirable for guests.
3. Embassy Suites Charleston (+) Good location and in a historic building, but (-) no private ceremony space.
4. Charleston Visitor Center (+) Fairly inexpensive compared to other locations. (-) Difficult to set up/strange layout for events inside.
5. Doubletree Guest Suites (+) Great location and nice courtyard ceremony space, plus a great event manager to work with, but (-) not the unique "Charleston" venue we were ultimately looking for.
